Challenge for Growth Construction Event

On Tuesday, 13th February, Essex construction companies came together for a successful networking event to discuss the challenges of growth in the sector.

Held by the ESB and Colchester Institute, the 'Challenge for Growth' event saw over 30 different companies attending on the day. This event was a follow-up to the 'Construction Opportunities is Essex' event and held workshops on ‘Winning Work’ and Grow Your Business Grow Your People’.

The event also included a panel discussion consisting of main contractors and developers which explored the skills and growth challenges; looking at supporting the construction supply chain to invest in innovation; technology and upskilling and apprenticeships. Afterwards, guests also got the chance to attend a BEST Growth Hub workshop on ‘How to Manage Risk in your Business’ which was introduced as a result of business feedback.

By 2036, Essex will need 180,000 new homes, will see two nationally important infrastructure projects in Bradwell B power station and the Lower Thames Crossing, plus the supporting road and rail infrastructure provision; it’s important for construction companies to get together to discuss the growth and skills challenges.

Cllr Kevin Bentley, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Economic Growth at Essex County Council, said: “Construction is a vital sector in Essex, employing 64,500 people across the county, so the ‘Challenge for Growth’ event is a great opportunity for construction companies to network, build relationships and gain valuable insight and information.

"The session has been set up as a direct result of the positive feedback from attendees at the Construction Opportunities in Essex event held late last year.”
