Developing Careers in Health

On the 4th of February around 70 Year 12 students from schools across Essex came along to Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) for the ‘Developing Careers in Health’ event aimed at highlighting a range of alternative careers in the Health sector.

In the morning session students heard from Dr. Sunil Gupta, Castlepoint and Rochford Clinical Commissioning Group and the ESB’s sector lead for Health, about the personal qualities required of potential new joiners to the sector. The event also saw Andy Corner, Senior Operating Department Practitioner at Broomfield Hospital, give a talk about his role and from Morgan Brown at the University about working in Nursing and Midwifery and the challenge of ARU’s undergraduate courses.

After lunch, students were split into groups and rotated around a series of 30 minute sessions focusing on careers in Health and ARU’s course offer. The ‘Making the Drugs of the Future’ session, held in ARU’s ‘Superlab’, gave attendees insight into pharmaceutical science-related careers and included footage of a medicine being 3D-printed.

‘You are what you eat’ included an exercise in ranking the sugar content of a range of soft drinks and ‘Why assist the Anaestheologist?’ allowed students to use some of the respiratory equipment used by ODP’s in a Hospital setting. Paramedic staff talked about the role and the varied possibilities working in the profession and the University’s Medical Technologists talked about future technologies in Health.

The aim of the day was to give young people insight into some alternative career pathways – some that they may never have considered - and to offer advice in terms of completing their UCAS applications later in the year.
