The ESB are seeking your support to help deliver a series of Masterclasses and Taster days for the Construction sector.

The ESB Education and Industry and Industry STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) Programme seeks to develop a pipeline of young of people for the County’s growth sectors (Engineering, Construction, Health, Care, Logistics, Finance, IT/Digital). As part of this programme we have a number of schools in the South of the County with cohorts of year 9 and 10 students with the desire, skills or aptitudes for a future career in the construction sector. The programme seeks to give these students a suite of enrichment activities to give them a compelling insight into the sector and help to ensure they go on to further study/take an apprenticeship in construction, particular in high-end professional roles. This is achieved by the team organising a range of industry mentoring, industry/site visits and experiences of work.

In order to achieve these objectives we are looking for support from industry for the following activities:

Construction Industry Taster Day

South Essex College, TBC 18th or 25th May  9am – 2.30pm

Purpose

A day long taster session for year 9 and 10 students particularly interested in a future career in high-end construction roles. Across the day there will be a series of 4 fun, one hour long hands-on workshops inspiring young people to think about roles and opportunities in the sector.

Materials and resources

Lunch will be provided and costs for materials and resources can be covered

Civil Engineering Masterclasses

ProCAT, Basildon. 6th,13th 7 20th May 10am-12.30pm

What are Masterclasses?

A masterclass is a hands-on session where students work on a task or activity (usually in groups). They are fun, stretching and challenging and will give students an insight into professional and technical roles in the construction sector.

How the series works?

The series is planning to run over three consecutive Saturday mornings from 10am – 12.30pm. Each session is delivered by a different ambassador and seeks to cover a different aspect within to civil engineering eg design, planning, estimating, surveying, architecture etc. Each session will have up to 30 year 9/10 students so 14/15 years old – the same students at each session.. A session should be pitched to be challenging however achievable for the students. Usually there is a short introduction from the facilitator followed by the task being set. A break in the middle and then coming back together at the end to wrap-up the session.

We are currently aiming for a series of 3, however if there is sufficient demand we may expand the series to six sessions. On the last session we invite all of our speakers back so that we can add an hour on to the final session so we can welcome parents along so they can hear what their students have learnt over the series.

Materials and resources

I have a budget to support the costs of reasonable equipment and resources for the day. ProCAT have a lecture theatre room and area outside to undertake relevant activities.

If you can help deliver any of these sessions or would like more information please contact Richard Bambridge: Richard.bambridge@essex.gov.uk
