Over 200 students attended the UK Aerospace Youth Rocketry Competition (UKAYRoC) on 24th April 2017.

The event involved students forming teams within their schools to build a model rocket that would be launched from an airfield at Stow Maries Aerodrome. To have a chance at entering the national finals (due to be held this June), teams had to build a rocket which would reach a limited height of 180ft. The real test of the students' engineering, however, was to try and keep the rocket airbourne as long as possible, as well as it having a safe landing to protect an egg contained inside.

Local companies offered their expertise to the students The rockets were tested the week prior, with final adjustments being made on the day, where all teams ensured that their rockets were ready to take to the skies on their three assessed flights. Rockets of all kinds and colours represented nine different Essex-based schools:

Basildon Lower Academy, Basildon Upper Academy, Great Baddow High School, James Hornsby School, Ormiston Rivers Academy, Stanway School, Stewards Academy, Sweyne Park and Westcliff High School for Boys.

We will be sharing the qualifying results on Twitter once they have been announced, so to be sure to follow our Twitter account: @EssexESB so you can show your support.

This event was organised by ADS Group, sponsored by the ESB and supported by our ESB STEM Programme.
