Logistics Taster Day at Woodlands School

Over the course of two days, 300 year 8 students at Woodlands School, Basildon, got the opportunity to get involved with some exciting, interactive sessions around the logistics sector.

As most of our STEM events, the aim was to encourage students to understand the role of the sector and how they could potentially play a part in it with a fulfilling career in the future. The children learnt about logistics sector with sessions held by E&I STEM Programme staff, DP World, Tesco, Bright House, Havering College and PD Transport.

On the first day, half of the year group were split into three groups of fifty and rotated around these sessions. The second half followed the same procedure allowing every student to access the great range of information on future careers, key skills and ways to enter the sector after their formal education.

From paper-boat racing, to discovering the ins-and-outs of the road vehicles that make up a large part of the distribution service, there were plenty of sessions to teach the children of the Basildon school the importance of the sector.

Students also had the chance to work together as a team in the logistics-based board game, ‘Business on the Move’. Four teams of up to eight students used strategy to import goods into the UK from a country outside of Europe and deliver them directly to their relevant company. The game, developed by two ex-teachers and founders of Business on the Move, encourages students to think about many aspects of the distribution process including air, sea, rail and road methods of transport, CO2 emissions, efficient delivery and economic spending.

We would like to thank the students and staff at Woodlands School for being very welcoming, and all of the supporting members from industry who enabled the taster sessions to be so successful.
