Build a Bridge

First up, we had rocketry expert John Jacomb come into ECC for a second time to Launch ADS UKRoC ‘Build a Rocket’ Competition on Tuesday 11th December. School leads were invited to attend the session and were given the chance to ask initial questions on behalf of their students who are taking part, and to pick up the materials provided by ECC.

The Test Day will take place at Stow Marie’s, Essex on the 21st March 2019.

We’re looking forward to seeing all the rockets launch next year!

With little time for a breather, on the following day the ‘Build a Bridge Competition’ took place at The Stanway School, Colchester. A total of 20 teams signed-up to the challenge, with 10 secondary schools across Essex taking part. The challenge was to design and construct a bridge using only glue and wooden sticks. The bridges were then tested by being placed on a rig and weights added until it finally destructed.

The winner of the competition was a team from Shenfield High School who’s bridge managed to hold a whopping 29KG! Brentwood County High School were awarded second-place with an equally impressive weight of 25KG.

A huge well done to all the students who took part, the school leads, industry mentors (AECOM, TES 2000, Flaktwoods and Explore STEM Ambassadors) and to ICE ambassador, Michael for supporting.

From everyone here at the STEM Programme, we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
