Students Get Hands on with 'Health Week'

Last week (Monday 20th – Friday 25th March), the ESB STEM Programme hosted a Health Week with Billericay School, Shenfield School and James Hornsby School. During this week, three health-related events took place to teach students about the wide opportunities within the health sector.

On the first day, the three schools had workshops with Operation Theatre Live, who re-enacted a car crash scene, interactively demonstrating the roles that the paramedics would have, and Training2Care who demonstrated their Virtual Sensory Bus for Dementia patients.

As well as this, a live Q&A session was held for students to ask insightful questions about some of the activities of the health panel. Students asked a range of questions from memorable experiences of the health staff, to how they attained their positions and what advice they would give to anyone interested in working in the sector. The panel consisted of:

Outlook Care (Service Manager for people with LD), East of England Ambulance Service (Paramedic Senior Technician), NHS: Basildon & Thurrock Hospital (Trained Nurse various specialities, Health Care Assistant, Anatomical Pathology Technician).

The children were fascinated in learning about the practical elements of the roles within this sector, as well as the ways in which they could access these opportunities, thanks to all of the staff that attended on the day.

Furthermore, the two other events also allowed students to work in groups to perform surgical procedures and explore the anatomy of a (dummy) animal. All of the students enjoyed dressing in the medical scrubs and the rare opportunity to experience a potential role first hand.
